Raising Cain

Dr. Michael Thompson, Ph.D. - Protecting The Emotional Life Of Boys

On May 17, 2016, from 7 pm to 9 pm in Ferrini Auditorium at the Hamilton Wenham High School, the Edfund is proudly bringing an important presentation on raising boys. And it's FREE.

Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D., is a consultant, author and psychologist specializing in chlidren and families. He wrote the NY Times best-selling book, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys and It's a Boy!: Understanding Your Son's Development from Birth to Eighteen.

In his presentation, Dr. Thompson will cover the following:

  • Four major issues  that frame the way we raise our boys and explain why and when we worry about our sons.
  • Parental fears at different stages of a boy's development.
  • How to overcome your doubts and enjoy raising a boy: Instructions for mothers and fathers.
  • Educators need to focus on "best practices" for boys.

annual Events

annual Events

Throughout the year the Edfund hosts a variety of events that are designed to serve as fundraising events. Below are short blurbs on our three big Edfund events. Below that is a deeper dive on each.

Last year's invitation to the Halloween Party.

In 2013, the Edfund launched it’s first-ever Halloween Party. Featuring a wide-array of creative costumes, the event was a fun night for all that also raised a significant amount for future grants.

Annual Christmas Tree Sale

Each year the Edfund holds a Christmas Tree sale as part of its annual fundraising efforts. The tree sale involves many different groups from across the community who come together to donate their time and efforts toward a worthy cause.

The Annual Halloween Party.

We started this little shindig in the fall of 2013 and it was a smash. A monster smash, you might say. It's a costume party, it's a fund raiser, it's a blast.

And we have to say, the people who attend this party do not mail it in. They go all out with their costumes. Which is why we started having a costume contest each year. Truly a spectacle, as you can see below.

Check back here in October for details on our next monster bash.

Edfund Christmas Tree Sale.

A major fund raiser for the Edfund is our Annual Christmas Tree Sale. We get our trees fresh every year up north, invite high school teams with strong arms and giving hearts to help us set up, and then we invite the community to volunteer to help us sell trees and buy them.

It ends up being much more than a sale of a Christmas tree and money for the Edfund. It ends up being a community event to celebrate the spirit of the holiday.

Be sure to check back here around Thanksgiving time for details on this year's Christmas Tree sale.

Minute To Win It

Minute To Win It.

In the springtime we do an annual "Minute To Win It" event at the Middle School. You may remember the TV show from decades ago of the same name, but it's a roomful of hilarious and challenging activities that "must" be accomplished within a minute (with enormous grace periods).

The kids get stickers for each station they accomplish, have a ton of fun (and pizza), and the parents get to learn a little about the Edfund. Not a big fund raiser for us. More of a friend raiser.

Check back here in March next year for details of the next event. Meanwhile, here are a bunch of pictures from our last one.
